The Lower Level of the Gardens

The gardens were built on three naturally occurring levels. The lower level follows the road alongside the 225 acre lake. Before Mr. Hodges purchased the property, the lake was an abandoned rock quarry. The rocks had been mined and transported to Port Arthur to be used for the jetties. Found on the lower level is the Bog Garden, a perfect example of a Louisiana hillside seepage.
